You can pretend that you’re twenty-nine—

What’s the difference?

When I look at you,

I see a beautiful young girl of seventeen

That I met on the beach in Atlantic City…

You’re cute

You’re sassy

You’re bold

You’re classy…

You’re a good mother

You’re a good cooker

You’re a great lover

You’re a fabulous looker…

You’re loving

You’re divine

And today

You’re (let’s pretend) twenty-nine

Then Jerry told Dena she had another mission to fulfill: shopping. This delicate assignment would require cunning and patience on his part, for Jerry hated shopping. Dena’s sartorial indecisiveness drove him crazy. So spending a day deep in the belly of Manhattan boutiques with his sweetheart was a precious gift indeed.

And yet, Jerry had a wonderful time. He was so pleased to have arranged something Dena would enjoy. Customarily, his wife hunted for bargains, but this time, Jerry insisted she simply buy what she wanted. He thrilled to her happiness. Dena felt so cherished. It was like the time he had accompanied her to her weekend-long class reunion, where Jerry didn’t know anyone. “Weren’t you bored?” Dena had asked him afterward. No, Jerry told her. He said he’d had a wonderful time just observing her happiness. Today, Dena realized the biggest gift was not the new outfits, but her husband. “Everyone likes to hear, ‘I love you,’” Dena thought. “But showing your love means more.”

At the end of the second day, Dena received a final note: “You and your ‘team’ have successfully completed your ‘mission.’ The ‘goods’ will arrive in Philadelphia. After all, WHY SHOULD YOU SCHLEP???” The evening ended with dinner and a show.

Once home, Dena told all her friends about the incredible trip and her wonderful husband, although her friends’ husbands were less than thrilled. “How come you don’t…?” “Why can’t you ever…?” Their wives gave them an earful. Jerry had little sympathy for the beleaguered spouses. After all, he knew that keeping romance alive is not an impossible mission, even after decades of marriage. Imagination, humor, and avoidance of all things humdrum matter far more than money.

“Romance is about doing the unexpected,” Dena says. “Make sure you keep a little mystery in your marriage.”

“We’ll be walking down the street in public,” adds Jerry, “and all of a sudden I’ll give her a real big kiss—a real smacker—a movie-star kind of kiss. She never knows when it’s going to happen. Now that’s romantic!”

Mission: Accomplished.
